Hailed by Opera News as having a “fine comic flair and well-schooled voice” for his performances as Pirelli in Sweeney Todd at the Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Anthony Webb continues his successes.
Recently he returned to Union Ave. Opera in St. Louis in the role of Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni and began last season in a reprise of that role with Tacoma Opera. He returned to his alma mater as Judas in Bach’s St. Matthew Passion alongside soprano, Angela Meade and was Beppe in I pagliacci and L'aumônier in Dialogues des Carmélites in a return to Vashon Opera in Washington. He debuted with Colorado Opera as Goro in Madama Butterfly and sang Mayor Upfold in Albert Herring with Vashon Opera.
On the concert side, Anthony Webb made his Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and Carnegie Hall debut in the spring of 2014 in Howard Hanson’s opera Merry Mount under the baton of Michael Christie and returned to Rochester the following season as soloist in Carmina Burana. He has soloed in Rossini’s Petite Messa Solennelle, Missa de Gloria, Handel’s Messiah and Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings.
Other engagements include roles with St. Petersburg Opera Company as Sam in their production of Carlyle Floyd’s Susannah, Count Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia to Sandra Piques Eddy’s Rosina at the Crested Butte Festival in Colorado, Mitch in Streetcar Named Desire with Union Ave. Opera and Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor with Opera in the Heights in Houston.
Earlier in his career he added the roles of Pirelli in Sweeney Todd with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis along with the role of Bantam Cock in Unsuk Chin’s Alice in Wonderland, Wagner and Mereus in Boito’s Mefistofele with Taconic Opera, Mathurin in Rossini’s L'ivrogne corrigé with Little Opera Theater of New York and Rodolfo in La bohème with Bronx Opera. He has covered the roles of Beadle Bamford in Sweeney Todd, Arnold and Ruodi in Guillaume Tell with the Caramoor Festival and made his debut with Des Moines Metro Opera in the roles of Elder Hayes in Susannah and Josiah Creach in another opera by Carlyle Floyd, Markeim.
A native of Washington State, Mr. Webb received his B.M.E. in Music Ed. from Pacific Lutheran University and earned his M.M. in Vocal Performance from Indiana University. His advanced training came through the young artists programs of Des Moines Metro Opera, the Caramoor Festival and Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. He has been honored by the Metropolitan Opera National Council with two Encouragement Awards and as a District Winner.
